Small towns vs big cities: how much more you pay for the same repair

Metro AC averages only ~$92 above nonmetro in our model; labor-heavy jobs show a wider gap.

People ask whether small towns are “cheaper.” In our file, OEWS splits areas into metro and nonmetro. We averaged Fairange mid estimates for every area that publishes a local wage for the trade.

For a central AC replacement, metro areas average about $5,270 vs $5,178 in nonmetro areas — only about $92 (1.8%) higher in metros. Equipment again flattens the story.

Labor-heavy work shows a clearer small-town break: drain cleaning averages $133 in metros vs $126 nonmetro (5.6% higher in metros). A 2,000 sq ft roof runs about $25,391 vs $24,277 (4.6%).

So: moving to a nonmetro ZIP does not automatically slash a materials-heavy HVAC bill. It can shave the labor-shaped jobs. Your actual contractor’s schedule, travel time, and supplier still dominate.

Type a rural ZIP into the calculator — we map it to a BLS area, including nonmetro regions.

Estimates, not bids. Fairange planning estimates from public BLS wages plus published hours/materials assumptions. Not contractor bids. Hours, materials baselines, and contractor markup (2.0× / 2.25× / 2.5×) are ours — published on the methodology page. Wages are BLS OEWS May 2025. Always get local written bids.
